Fun fact: According to legend, a court sorcerer in the middle ages proclaimed that drinking wine from a cup set with amethysts would prevent the effects of drunkenness. To prove his assertion, he served the court large amounts of wine from such cups. Lo and behold, no one got drunk! Of course, the wine was unfermented grape juice and the sorcerer's promising career was cut short by an unfortunate accident when the king found out!

Legendary origins: It is said that the emerald was brought to Earth by the Lords of Flame from the planet Venus.
Fun fact: In thirteenth century India, powdered emerald was considered to be an excellent laxative. It was also used as a cure for dysentary and to stimulate the appetite, promoting health and eliminating demonic influences.

Fun fact: Some cut stones from Russia came from a meteorite that fell in east Siberia in 1749.

Folklore: A fourteenth century treatise attributed to Sir John Mandeville assured a fortunate owner of a ruby that he would live in peace and concord with all men, that neither his land nor his rank would be taken from him, and that he would be preserved from all perils. The magic of the stone would also guard his house, fruit trees and vineyards from injury by tempest.

History: According to legend and tradition, the law given to Moses was inscribed on tablets of sapphire.
Tanzanite

Healing properties: Tanzanite is too new a stone to have many properties attributed to it. However, like all blue stones, it has a calming influence, and is well used as an aid to meditation.
History: Tanzanite, found only in Tanzania, was first discovered in 1963 and was introduced to the marketplace by New York jewelers Tiffany & Co. Already in short supply, it is estimated that the world's supply of the stone will run out in the next ten to fifteen years!

History: A fifteenth century Roman physician was reputed to have wrought many cures of those stricken with the plague by touching plague sores with a topaz which had been owned by two popes, Clement VI and Gregory II.
